Flower Power Player

Compatibility with your florist isn’t on par with compatibility with your mate, but it’s pretty darn close. Be sure to shop around with two or three vendors for the best possible fit, ask a lot of questions, and trust your gut. Oh, and remember your budget. It’s at the root of your floral fantasy.

At the interview: Come armed with photos of flowers you love, arrangements that take your breath away, and swatches of colors you plan to use. Bring pics of the ceremony and reception sites, as well as a detailed list of everyone who will need flowers. Be frank and unapologetic about your budget limits.

Getting a read: Check out the florists manner as well as his or her portfolio, press, and references. You need someone who is knowledgeable but open to your ideas–and a creative thinker is a bonus. Also, tune in to see if he or she is responding to your vision of the wedding. After all, this is your show, not the flower shop’s.

Practical details: Get the particulars from the get-go. Will the florist himself deliver the blooms on the big day? Will you be charged additionally for the rental of containers or bowls? Does she do any pretty extras–like candles, lights, or trellises?

The dotted line: When you find a florist youre happy with, get the specifics down in writing. Plan on finalizing–and sending in a deposit–around six months in advance, or as early as possible.
